About the Program

The Kindergarten Kids Balanced Reading Program was developed and implemented throughout several years at the Weaubleau R-III Elementary as a component of it's Title 1 Schoolwide Reading Program.
The goal of the program was to create reading success at an early age,
therefore promoting acceleration rather than remediation.

In May of 2000, the Weaubleau Tiger Cubs Reading Program was presented with a Nationally Recognized Distinguished Title 1 School award at the IRA conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Reading Success at an Early Age

"Kindergarten Kids" is a phonics-based balanced reading program.  The basic skills of reading and writing are taught to 5 year olds with the help of these six "Kindergarten Kids" and animal friends whom the students grow to know and love.

Systematic Approach

The foundation of the program is 30 Kindergarten Kid stories (30 teaching units). Through MANIPULATIVES and HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES the letter sounds, sight words, and skills are introduced systematically increasing in complexity throughout the lessons.

Hands-On Learning

Students learn to read while having fun by using hands-on manipulatives to stay on task during 100% of their instructional time.  The program is designed to work with small groups or individuals but could be easily adapted to large groups. Keeps the attention of ALL students, including At-Risk children. Teaches those "hard to reach" students who may have failed with more traditional programs.
